Now available for the first time are outtakes from the filming of the fake Apollo 11 moon landing. The complete original footage is stored at NASA Headquarters in Washington DC. These outtakes have remained secret until now.
The fake moon landing was orchestrated at the highest levels of the US government. President Richard M. Nixon, facing rising civil unrest over the Vietnam War, a deadline to meet President John F. Kennedy’s challenge to land a man on the moon by 1969, and rapid advances in the Soviet space program, ordered the creation of a simulated moon landing that could be displayed on national television to prove that the US had succeeded and to distract from domestic unrest.
Famed director Stanley Kubrik was tapped for the project. Kubrik had recently completed the ambitious special effects film 2001: A Space Odyessy, winning Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Art Direction, Best Story, and Best Special Visual Effects.
Orchestrated by the CIA under the code name Operation Green Cheese, the primary shooting locations were the NASA Lunar Landing Research Facility in Langley, Virginia and at Barringer Crater near Winslow, Arizona. Despite tight security there were leaks. A CIA disinformation campaign code-named Operation Moldy Cheese was put in place to cast anything contrary to the official moon landing story as conspiracy theory.
